Corpus Christi is my home. I raised my family here, attended church here and I watched as my children and some of my grandchildren graduated from schools here.
This city has been good to my family. With God's blessing, my husband and I were able to build a great life, including developing, owning and operating a world-wide energy services company that we sold in 2021.
Corpus Christi gave me the opportunity to serve on City Council and the Nueces County Commissioners Court. I am not now nor have I ever been a politician. I am a problem solver and I promise you i will always serve with honor and integrity.
When I left the Corpus Christi City Council in 2018, things seemed to be making progress ... but today things have changed. We are at a crossroads and we need to apply common sense solutions to get our city back on track.
We all want to make Corpus Christi better. With your vote, we can do that together.
2024 offers a chance to elect Corpus Christi decision-makers who will listen to citizens and find common sense solutions to problems that have plagued our city for too long.
It's not too late, but we have to work together and stop spending money on projects that don't solve problems and that promote "needs" over wants.
As our campaign moves forward, I want to stress these key points that i think will help move our city toward our shared goals for the future.
There are numerous issues facing the city of Corpus Christi. We can find real, workable solutions by partnering with other governmental entities such as the Port of Corpus Christi, Nueces County, the Regional Transportation Authority and the Texas Legislature in addition to area non-profits and community groups.
That means not worrying about who or what group gets the credit and being more concerned with how it affects our community.
Too often at city hall, powerful people put themselves first over the needs of our city. That needs to stop. There should be no outrageous pay raises for our city manager and other top employees while the city is in debt and our rank and file city employees don't even get a cost of living increase. Let's bring common sense back to city hall.
You deserve to know what is going on with your city government. When I previously served on the Corpus Christi City Council I pushed for more transparency. No more "behind closed doors" sweetheart deals that only benefit a few. As your next At Large Council Member I will push to bring more of city government into the light so that everyone will know how their tax dollars are spent and why certain decisions are made.
Corpus Christi needs an "all of the above" response to meeting our water needs.
Our city must prioritize our streets.
Too often we spend money on new studies year after year, instead of developing and sticking with a long-range plan with goals that can be realistically met.
Our streets are filled with potholes, many of which remain unfilled for months, causing damage to tires and undercarriages of cars that travel our roads.
Every year our citizens are confused by unmet promises to get their residential roads fixed in addition to those arterial roads which people travel everyday. We must be more diligent in providing needed information and good customer service to those making the requests for help.
Corpus Christi has the largest budget in our city's history.
While we have to plan for growth and infrastructure we can't let our "wants" override our "needs" when it comes to our city budget.
I believe in growth but let's do it in a financially responsible way that benefits both our small and large businesses and our families who live here - without breaking the bank.
Our city is blessed with a great police and fire department. Every day they put their lives on the line to protect us and keep our families safe. Now is the time for us to take care of them.
I have always been a strong supporter of our first responders and supporting them should be one of our city's top priorities. This can be done without raising taxes. These men and women deserve a fair wage and good working environment. I will continue to work hard to make sure we have the best law enforcement in Texas.
Carolyn Vaughn is a proven conservative leader and business owner who is running for Corpus Christi City Council At-Large.
Previously, Carolyn served as a Corpus Christi City Council Member and Nueces County Commissioner where she fought against proposed tax increases, worked to improve infrastructure and has always been a strong supporter of law enforcement.
As one of eight children raised by a single mom, she worked in the school cafeteria to pay for her meals. Her father, who was abusive to both his wife and kids, was put in prison and Carolyn's mother struggled to pay the bills and put food on the table. Then, in the 10th grade, Carolyn had to drop out of school to take care of her brother who had Muscular Dystrophy. But that didn't stop Carolyn Vaughn.
Carolyn got her GED, went to community college, and, with her husband Gary, raised a family and helped build a multi-million dollar oil and gas services business known as Gyro Technologies INC.
Carolyn knows the importance of a dollar and the value of hard work. She's proved it as a member of the City Council and as a County Commissioner where she worked hard on pocketbook issues that affected her constituents, never voted for a tax increase and worked to protect law enforcement.
Carolyn Vaughn is not a politician; she is a public servant, and she is ready to put her life experience and conservative values to work for us here in Corpus Christi.
Carolyn and her husband Gary have been married for more than 50 years and have three grown children, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. They are Evangelical Christians and live in the Calallen area of Corpus Christi.
